The West End returns to Sandown Park Racecourse on Saturday 20th August – Variety Club Day, when the award winning play War Horse, from the book written by Michael Morpurgo comes to life on the course with special guest, horse psychologist Kelly Marks.

Kelly is one of the country's most popular and effective specialists in understanding horse psychology and behaviour and finding workable solutions for the benefit of both horses and their owners.  She will demonstrate her world-renowned equine training techniques with her own horse and the War Horse Puppet Joey in the Parade Ring in between racing - this is a show you will not want to miss.

Sandown Park is also very excited to announce a line up of fantastic children’s authors from the publishers Hachette Children’s Books who will be at the racecourse signing their bestselling books and characters.   Books for each author will be on sale throughout the day.

Mick Inkpen - one of the top-selling picture book artists and writers in the world. The Kipper and Wibbly Pig stories have millions of readers worldwide and racegoers will be able to meet the loveable Kipper character himself who will be walking round the racecourse greeting young fans.

Robert Muchamore - Robert Muchamore was born in Islington in 1972 and spent thirteen years working as a private investigator. He was inspired to create the CHERUB series by his nephews' complaints about the lack of anything for them to read! The CHERUB series has now become a number one bestseller in several countries.

There are also events with the hugely popular Rainbow Fairies, where you’ll be able to learn all about how to be a fairy, play fairy games, make fairy wings and learn new songs.  Beast Quest will also be turning up:  the popular series for boys from 6-9 years old, a must for all would-be heroes.  Be ready to hunt down beasts and make your own shield.

Other entertainment on the day includes a visit from the Little Angel Theatre - "the Home of British Puppetry" and racegoers will be able to enjoy demonstrations of different types of puppets as well as interact with the crowds and entertain the children. There is also the Drop In Puppet making classes in which children can sit down and make a puppet to take away with them that day.  Face painting and bouncy castles will be on course to keep the little ones amused and all entertainment is FREE.

Racegoers will be able to indulge their taste buds in the new Haagen Daz’s VIP marquee where only winning guests are allowed to enter.  Buy yourself a tub of the premium ice cream and if you are one of the lucky winners of the lucky lid competition you get to spend an hour in the Häagen-Dazs marquee being treated to ice cream sundaes and cocktails – this a chance for you to truly indulge at Sandown Park.

Variety Club Day is all about children and having fun and as usual there will be lots of famous faces from the world of entertainment to lend a touch of celebrity glamour to the occasion.  Don’t forget as well that children under 18 accompanied by an adult get in for free
