RUGBY AT THE RACES

18/08/2008

Training has already begun for the start of the rugby season and as the final of Sandown Park’s flat race meetings draw to a close and the first breath of autumn stirs the trees of the leafy racecourse, a final themed day of the summer will be the Rugby and Racing day on Friday 12 September.

Prior to racing in the Parade Ring, the racecourse will be hosting a ‘Rugby Panel’ which will consist of two iconic players, Stuart Abbot, the former Harlequins Centre player who last season announced his retirement due to a shoulder injury and the legendary Scott Gibbs, who represented Wales and the Lions.  His most memorable feats were his performance in the 1997 British Lions tour to South Africa (in which he was named "Player of the Series") and the superb individual try he scored in the dying minutes of the last ever Five Nations match in 1999 against England.  Each player will give their thoughts on the season ahead and who will win the Premiership 2008/09.   Members of the Esher RFC team and management will also be present in their new seasons’ kit.

Coral Bookmakers, sponsors of the Guinness Premiership have kindly donated their inflatable goalposts which will be situated next to the Winner’s Enclosure with professional coaches on hand where racegoers will have the chance to see how good their kicking skills really are!  There is also the chance of winning a £5 drinks voucher, compliments of the racecourse if you get 5 out of 5 drop goals over the post!

If you wear your nation's rugby shirt, we'll give you £5 off entry to the Grandstand enclosure at £13.
