EQUINE CHAMPIONS TO PARADE AT SANDOWN PARK
12/04/2010
The bet365 Gold Cup Day on Saturday 24 April at Sandown Park Racecourse is one of the pinnacle racedays in the sports calendar and is unique in that both Flat and Jump racing are both staged during the day along with a parade to celebrate the Champions of the past season.
This is a rare opportunity to witness a parade of the jumps season’s equine champions, which this year will include four time winner of the William Hill King George VI Chase - Kauto Star, winner of the 2009 Hennessy Gold Cup Chase – Denman, Big Bucks – dual winner of the Ladbrokes World Hurdle, Imperial Commander winner of the 2010 Totesport Gold Cup, Alberta’s Run, winner at both 2010 Cheltenham and Aintree Festival and 2009/2010 Order of Merit Champion. The winner of 2010 John Smith’s Grand National, Don’t Push It, will also parade. The Parade of Champions will take place in The Paddock at approximately 12.15pm.
The parade will then be followed by an awards ceremony, where the season’s Champion Trainer, Paul Nicholls, Champion Owner, JP McManus, and Champion Jockey, Tony McCoy will all be crowned. New for this year is the Sandown Park Special Award and The People’s Award as voted by the racegoers who get to choose their favourite Jumps moment in 2009/10. This can be awarded to either a jockey, trainer, owner or horse. Celebrity chef James Martin, members of the Team GB Winter Olympic Team and Rugby World Cup winning Richard Hill and Brian Moore will be presenting these awards.
The first race of the day is a Flat Vs Jump Jockeys race with the Champion Jockey of each code (Jump; AP McCoy, Flat; Ryan Moore) lining up against each other. Following the exciting action from the track, Irish hit band, The Saw Doctors, will round off the day with a live performance.
