Girls Aloud & Madness

Sandown Park Racecourse is delighted to two music nights this summer, featuring two top international acts, the first time such high profile bands will have performed at the racecourse in one year.  Girls Aloud will be playing their debut at the racecourse live after racing on Thursday 17 July and Madness on Thursday 7 August 2008.

The UB40 music night in 2007 was a phenomenal success attracting over 14,000 racegoers to the racecourse and making the evening one of the most popular events in the Sandown Park racing calendar.

Girls Aloud, the UK’s premier girl band, is one of the most successful British pop groups of the decade, with a record-breaking seventeen consecutive Top 10 singles, three number 1’s, four platinum albums and record sales in excess of 4.2 million in the UK alone.   After five years, 3 albums and a Greatest Hits, Sarah, Nadine, Kimberley, Cheryl and Nicola have even entered the Guinness Book of Records for their phenomenal sales. Having beaten records set by both Destiny’s Child and Spice Girls, this proves Girls Aloud will go down as one of the UK’s most successful bands ever.

The girls have performed at many different venues across the UK and will embark on their ‘Tangled Up Tour’ where they will play at Sandown Park singing a selection of their greatest songs from the distinct 1980s sound of ‘No Good Advice’ and ‘Jump’ through to the 1960s sound of ‘Love Machine’ to the more futuristic sound of ‘Biology’ and ‘Call the Shots’.

Madness, Britain’s most successful chart band in music history, having had twenty-one top-twenty singles in a seven year period from ’78-’86, and many more since (over 30 in total), which include ‘It Must Be Love’, ‘Embarrassment’, ‘Baggy Trousers’, ‘My Girl’ and ‘One Step Beyond’.  This was a great achievement and set the tone for almost three decades of complete Madness.  The band’s sound developed from their early ska routes, showing their love of Motown/Stax rhythms and three minute melodies almost ignored in Britain since the late 60’s.

Today, you can hear them everywhere: in the hurdy-gurdy exuberance of The Kaiser Chiefs, in the staccato rhythms of Franz Ferdinand, in the ska-tones of The Ordinary Boys and even in the clever knowing pop of Robbie Williams – Madness are all around us and now they’re back, bringing Madness to the masses again with last years sets at Glastonbury, Bestival and the London O2 adding to the legend!

Both bands will perform a one hour live performance immediately after the last race.

David Mackinnon, Managing Director for Sandown Park Racecourse commented: “We are delighted to welcome Girls Aloud and Madness for their first visit to Sandown Park, two of the most popular bands in the UK.  Our music evenings have proved hugely popular amongst our racegoers over the last few years and to avoid disappointment, I strongly advise you to book early as we are anticipating sell out crowds. I look forward to two nights of great entertainment as part of the summer season at Sandown Park Racecourse.”
